In Game Blog

Alright folks, this is my "pilot blog." Instead of countless Facebook status updates about the Rangers games, I have created a blog. Please feel free to join the discussion, if you love the Rangers and love talking about the great game of baseball, this is the place for you!

6:41 - Blog created, ready for baseball!

6:55 - Julio Borbon gets his Major League debut tonight. It's always exciting to see a young player who has a bright future get his shot. Here are his stats from Triple A:

"Borbon, 23, a left-handed hitter, was hitting .298 with two home runs, 11 doubles, five triples and 28 RBIs over 71 games at Triple-A. He had a .365 on-base percentage and 19 steals in 23 attempts. His two home runs have both come in the last week and he was hitting .323 in June."

7:01 - Vincente Padilla has been one of the Rangers best pitchers since his waiver episode. The Rangers need him to step up again tonight. His career against the Angels isn't all that bad: 6-3 with a 3.38 ERA. What the Rangers concern is tonight though is swinging the bats. Their strategy at the plate has been flawed this month. Major League pitchers know how to adjust to a team that is doing nothing but swinging for the fences. The Rangers hitters must be more patient and have better pitch selection. The Angels are coming in with a tired bullpen, so if we can work some counts and get some guys on base, this game should go in favor of Texas

7:13 - It's crazy how something so small in this game can change things so drastically. If Hunter doesn't swing at that 3-2 pitch, the Angels have runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. As it is, he strikes out and the Rangers easily throw out Abreu running on the pitch, now let's get the bats going!

7:25 - My buddy the Yankee fan says that was "an awful inning for the Rangers." I disagree. Mike Young works an 0-2 count to 3-2 then hits a ball hard, Marlon Byrd hit one hard as well. Borbon looked ok in his first at bat despite the strikeout. As long as we keep hitting pitches up in the zone, we'll be ok.

7:29 - What a beast Chris Davis would be if he would start hitting to his potential. Two outstanding plays in that 2nd inning.

7:45 - Has anyone noticed Ichiro hitting .372??? Gahhhhh

7:52 - D. Murphy with the big blast, Rangers strike first! And as I type, Marlon Byrd drives one! 2-0 Rangers!

8:11 - Padilla works through the 4th giving up a run via walk, single, double. The double comes on a curve ball Padilla tried to drop in for a strike but Morales was looking for it and drove it down the line. Padilla drops the same pitch to Izturis for strike 3 to end the inning.

8:15 - Rangers are looking like they are going to continue to struggle against pitchers who throw off speed pitches out of the zone. The hard hit balls have come on fastballs over the plate, but the Rangers are in trouble when off speed comes at them. I don't want to bash Rudy TOO much right now, but I think after a month an adjustment should be made.

8:23 - I'm almost certain that should have been an automatic double play....not sure Aybar was in arm's length of the base.....that could turn out to be a big call

8:30 - Good job by Padilla striking out Hunter for the second time tonight...Padilla has had an excellent fastball tonight, getting up to 93. On a non baseball note, has anyone noticed Jack in the Box marketing directly to stoners? They are some revolutionary advertisers. Anyway, top of the order gets things going with a basehit by Kinsler....let's swing at some good pitches and do some damage this inning!

8:33 - Mike Young is doing exactly what I've been saying the Ranger hitters should do: Lay off the off speed outside the zone, and drill the pitch out over the plate. He did it in his first at bat and worked a walk in his 3rd at bat.

8:36 - I would have loved to see Murphy lay down a bunt there. I know he's been one of our best hitters, but I would have really liked to see 2nd and 3rd with one out and Marlon Byrd coming up.....as it is, he hits into a double play that WOULD have been avoided had Murphy laid down a sac bunt.....managerial error.

8:43 - It was a pretty good pitch by Padilla, a low fast ball but Rivera hit it out anyway...and well now, Morales hits the same pitch in the same spot....looks like the Angel hitters have adjusted to Padilla.....hmm, "adjusted." 4-2

8:51 - wow! a sac bunt by the Angels! now the Angels have 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and now Figgins hits a sac fly to make it 5-2. Excellent job of managing the game by the Angels skipper

8:56 - Who feels like a 3 run deficit is insurmountable due to the Rangers lack of offensive power in the month of June? I do. I hope I'm wrong, but the Rangers will have to PROVE me wrong. Nelson Cruz sees nothing and I mean NOTHING but pitches on the outside part of the plate....yet he keeps his wide open stance and dead pull swing.....he'll be in a slump for the rest of the season unless he adjusts.

9:05 - Stadium near empty. I highly doubt there is another sports city in the country where fans jump on a band wagon SO fast and then jump off it just as fast. Of course, 37 years of losing will do that.

9:10 - The Rangers will need at least 6 runs to win tonight. The Rangers have played 26 games this month....how many times have the Rangers scored 6 runs or more? 6. That's not going to get the job done.

9:30 - easy out after easy out.....at least Young drove an outside pitch to the opposite field.

9:36 - Cruz pulls another outside pitch and grounds weakly to short only to have it booted. Rangers can't capitalize though...more poor hitting with runners in scoring position. 3 outs left to get 4 runs.

9:46 - Eddie is pissed! I guess he was hyped up about striking out Vlad....I'm not exactly sure why Wash thinks rookie Doug Mathis is a better match up against Rivera than Eddie is...but hey, he gets the job done. We need a rally!

9:57 - A typical Ranger loss tonight: decent pitching, good defense, and awful hitting. People will think it's ok because we hit a couple home runs, but we could not get guys on base and the few times we did, we could not drive them in. I've said it a thousand times, stop trying to pull outside pitches and stop chasing off speed stuff out of the zone. The Rangers will continue to struggle unless they adjust. Well, let's get em tomorrow! Good night.
